NHS Community Service Project

On October 10th ten NHS members, (three absent for a football trip, one member out with a serious knee injury that precluded her from participating, three absent) participated in our fall community service event. The NHS advertised the event by producing and sending out 550 flyers to the majority of Springer post office box holders, advertising on both the towns Chamber of Commerce web site (the towns responsibility) and our SHS web site (assisted by NHS member Kara Burton). Two seniors, Angelica Montoya and Anthony Romero, as well as the advisor, were on the “This That and the Other”  radio show at 9 am on Tuesday, October 7th , on the local Raton radio station.

We received a NHS members’ parents help, driving a truck and trailer, donating his time and fuel, and supervising a crew of five NHS students.

We visited 23 community members homes, removing enough garbage to fill a roll off unit completely, which was generously donated by the town government especially for the event. We disposed of everything from a piano to a swing set to multiple trailer loads of unsavory carpet. Community member Joe Baca recycled the steel items we could not place in the roll off due to state and federal guidelines.

I truly appreciate all of the community members, from the Mayor, to the city workers, to the people of Springer that allowed us to assist them,  who donated of their time and expertise to model the appropriate community involvement and dedication that is a hallmark of Nation Honor Society and good citizens everywhere.
